Charles Vestal NuSaw is a new Roland JP-8000-style supersaw Synthesizer plugin for iOS and macOS with three LFOs, effects, and more.

What do the alternative Ableton Move firmware SCHWUNG and apps like Tapescam and Ambiotica have in common? The developer! They all come from Charles Vestal, who was involved in vibe coding early on.

Now he has a new Synthesizer. With NuSaw, Charles Vestal demonstrates a Supsaw synthesizer for iOS and macOS.

NuSaw is a new polyphonic supersaw Synthesizer plugin for iOS and macOS with AUv3 support. It’s inspired by the legendary Roland JP-8000 supersaw Synthesizer.

With NuSaw, you don’t need to be a code detective, as Charles Vestal openly admits he vibe-coded/AI-assists the apps. He provided information in the comments of my Ableton SCHWUNG (former Move Everything) article.

At the core is a single oscillator block that features a stack of 3 to 25 detuned sawtooth oscillators with an extra sine sub-oscillator. You can set the amount of saw waveforms, detune and spread them in the dedicated section. Nice, you can also tune the sub.

Then the signal goes into a resonant 12/24 dB low-pass or band-pass filter with cutoff and resonance controls. Plus, you have a non-resonant high-pass filter.

On the modulation side, it comes with two ADSR envelopes with a fixed path to the amp and filter. Plus, there are three freely assignable synceable multi-wave LFOs with a retrigger option. A modulation matrix on the UI page two handles these.

On top sits a full effects chain with a recreation of the SUPER Chorus from the JP-8000, a tempo-syncable stereo ping-pong delay, an overdrive, and a plate reverb.

More Features

Alongside this, Charles Vestal added a programmable, sequenced gate processor to NuSaw with adjustable steps, smoothing, and more. There is also a multimode arpeggiator with chance, gate, and swing.

It ships the app with over 50 presets, including leads, basses, stabs, pads, strings, arps, and keys. Many AI-coded apps come with very sterile and generic interfaces. Charles Vestal has made some effort to reduce this.

First Impression

The market is flooded daily with new apps, most of which are coded with AI. Therefore, I’ve decided to pick out just a few. NuSaw seems to me to be one of the better synth apps of the last few days. It also sounds very solid in the initial sound demos.

Charles Vestal NuSaw is available now for $6,99. It runs as a standalone app and AUv3 plugin on iOS (iPhone/iPad) and macOS.

  1. Thanks for the support! One small correction: the chorus is a recreation of the _SUPER_ Chorus on the JP. My own typo I made in the description, will be corrected in the next release.
