Audio Damage ShinRonin, the modular dual-delay and dual-morphing filter plugin from 2003, is back as a free, modern plugin for macOS, Linux, Windows, and iOS.

Update: the iOS version is out now

Chris Randall and Adam Schabtach, better known as Audio Damage, have been making plugins since 2002. One of their first plugins was ShinRonin, an advanced delay filter plugin released in 2003 and discontinued in 2009.

Surprise: Audio Damage has now reborn ShinRonin as a modern free plugin.

ShinRonin is a free modular-style delay filter plugin for macOS, Linux, Windows, and iPadOS.

According to Audio Damage, ShinRonin carries forward the architecture and sound of the original plugin from 2003. It’s not a port but a ground-up rebuild.

ShinRonin features two delays, two filters, two saturation units, and modulation that are routable in a “modular” way. The two delays are based on emulation of older digital and tape delays. They are syneable, loopable, through, and reversible.

Then the delays feed two morphing filters with classic cutoff and resonance controls. They operate completely independently. You can seamlessly morph from br to lowpass, to bandpass, and to highpass.

For extra crispness and harmonics, it houses two saturation units with amount control. Motion is important in ShinRonin. For this, it has two syncable multi-wave LFOs and an envelope follower.

Modular Audio & Modulation Patching

Two highlights of the Audio Damage ShinRonin plugin are the two matrices. One is for audio and the other for modulation.

The audio signal from any module (delay, filter, saturation, feedback, output) can be connected to the inputs of one or more other modules. It’s also possible to mix signals from several modules and to connect them to other modules.

This “modular” flexibility allows for a wide range of effects, making it a powerful FX unit. Also, the control routing is patchable in a modular way. You can modulate a wide range of parameters with the built-in modulators and dedicated mod amounts.

ShinRonin’s signal path ends in the master section, with dry/wet controls and independent volume and pan controls for the stereo signal. It also ships with a browser featuring various factory presets to showcase its capabilities.

First Impression

Excellent news from Audio Damage during the hot summer weeks. I’m also pleased that an iPadOS version will be released soon.

Audio Damage ShinRonin is available now as a free download. It runs as a VST3, AU, and CLAP plugin on macOS (native Apple Silicon + Intel), Linux, and Windows. An iPad version is out now on the Apple App Store with AUv3 support.

No trial, no DRM, no iLok, no online activation, and no expiration. Install it on every machine you own.
