Amici Instruments Macro is a new colorful 4-oscillator Synthesizer plugin for iOS and macOS with dual hard sync and more.
The App Store has seen a surge in new companies in recent months. Whether they’ll last or disappear again after a while remains to be seen. What is true there’s a flood of new developers and apps. AI tools are making it possible.
Amici Instruments, founded by Glenn Vassallo, is one of these new companies, releasing two apps simultaneously, one of which is Macro.
Amici Instruments Macro
Macro is a new 4-oscillator Synthesizer app and plugin for iOS and macOS.
The interface immediately raised my personal AI red flag, as we’ve seen similar fonts and such very often in recent months. The website layout also raises these concerns. However, I can neither confirm nor deny whether the app was ultimately created with AI.
These days, many new developers use the same UI libraries that you can find in JUICE and other tools. But the layout reminds me somewhat of BLEASS, which is also very colorful.
Amici Instruments Macro features four multi-wave oscillators (sine, triangle, saw, ramp, pulse, and noise), each with various controls, including detune, PWM, and wave folding.
According to the developer, a unique feature is dual hard sync of the synth, available in two parallel chains. This gives you not only wave folding but also hard sync per oscillator.
Sound Shaping
Since each oscillator runs independently, it also offers its own multimode filter (LP 6/12/18/24, BP, HP, Notch, Formant) with cutoff, resonance, envelope, and key follow. This allows you to shape each sound source differently.
On the modulation side, you have four multi-wave LFOs to independently modulate the filter, volume, wavefold, and pitch of each oscillator. It also comes with additional features like control over the phase, reset, and clock sync.
Then, you have two envelopes, one for the filter and one for the VCA with linear, exponential, and drone modes. It’s also possible to link envelopes, filters, LFOs, and more across all oscillators when you want it simpler.
To refine your sounds, it also comes with a master multi-FX section with overdrive (soft, hard, tube, fold), a compressor, a delay, a reverb, stereo width, and a limiter. All effects offer several slider parameters that let you adjust them to your sound.
Also onboard is glide with various options (exp, linear, log, S-curve, legato), a flexible patch randomizer, and an XY pad for expressive control.
If you lack inspiration, you can also try the app’s built-in song player with public-domain tracks. This feature is, however, only available in the standalone version.
First Impression
A colorful new synthesizer for iOS and macOS. I like the decision to do everything with sliders, which is especially well-suited for performance. Since it’s a subtractive synth, most of the sounds in this app will certainly be familiar to many.
I suppose the dual hard sync and the ability to filter per oscillator are its special features.
Amici Instruments Macro is available now for $4,99 or get it in the bundle with Bruno for $7,49. It runs as a standalone and AUv3 plugin on iOS (iPhone/iPad) and macOS.
