Moby Pixel Mighty is a free tree-oscillator AUv3 Synthesizer, multi-sampler, and multi-FX plugin for iOS and macOS.
Every year, numerous new synthesizers and samplers are released for iOS. Very few of them are free apps, but there are exceptions.
Moby Pixel, who also has a YouTube channel, has released Mighty, a free Synthesizer app that includes four AUv3 plugins.
Moby Pixel Mighty
Mighty is a new free AUv3 Synthesizer and multi-sampler plugin for iOS and macOS. Yes, you read it right, Moby Pixel Mighty is 100% free, but you can support it by buying a sound pack via an in-app purchase.
The synth engine is subtractive and is powered by the AudioKit engine. It features three independent multi-wave oscillators with dedicated volume, semi-tone, detune, and pan controls.
Then, you have a lowpass filter with cutoff and resonance controls and two ADSR envelopes (amp, filter). An LFO is also available that can be routed to the filter cutoff, pitch, or volume.
You can refine your synth sounds with a built-in FX processor with nine algorithms: reverb, delay, chorus, LFO, unison up to 8 voices, and more.
The Sampler
The sampler engine is independent of the Synthesizer. It allows you to build your own sample-based instrument scratch. You can either record directly in the 16-slot sampler or import audio files.
Once done, you can map them across the keys, set loop points, adjust root notes and note ranges, and more. Multi-samples can also be imported via the new SF2/SFZ soundfont import function from update 1.0.2
The 1.0.2 update also introduces a built-in arpeggiator with BPM sync, octave range, and various patterns.
Neat, you can also choose between multiple play surfaces. You can work with classic keys or pads, or also unique setups like an all 4ths scale layout
MIDI support with CC mappings for instantly mapping parameters to your favorite controller is also on board.
A highlight of the app is the AUv3 support. It’s not just regular AUv3 support, but it goes further. Moby Pixel includes four Mighty AUv3 plugins in one app: the synth, the sampler for capturing external sounds, effects, and the MIDI (MIDI processor and play interface). There is also a visualizer.
The app comes with a built-in starter bank and supports downloadable sound packs, both free and paid. New packs are added to the store without requiring an app update. You can also create your own banks and share them with others
First Impression
There aren’t many free synthesizers or sample apps for iOS/macOS. I’m happy to see that there’s another one now. The Mighty looks very solid. The multi-sampler, which can also play SFZ files, is a nice feature.
It would be nice if future updates included features like FM, PWM, or the ability to use the synth and sampler together, to make it a more powerful.
