Flora Creative Dahlia is a new tape-delay plugin for iOS and macOS with Tape wow-and-flutter modulation, driven by Perlin noise.

The AUv3 format for iOS has been around for 11 years, if not longer. One of the first developers was Flora Creative, who released some very nice classic FX plugins. Then there was a long hiatus, and most of the apps disappeared from the App Store.

Now, Flora Creative makes a comeback with Dahlia, a new tape delay plugin.

Dahlia is a new stereo tape delay plugin for iOS and macOS. Attention, Flora Creative also has another Dahlia app in the store, which is a 2015 delay processor app. This one is called Dahlia Tape Delay and is the developer’s latest release.

The processor has independent left/right delay times with an adjustable spread control. There is an option to link both times to create a stereo tape delay, or for ping-pong with an adjustable width slider.

You can choose between four delay time modes: free (in milliseconds), sync to the host clock, or dotted or triplet. According to the developer, it uses drift-compensated delay lines for stable long delays.

Feedback is also available. It uses a tape compression algorithm with built-in EQ and head-response filtering that let you easily push it to its limits.

Organic Satisfaction

Of course, a tape delay shouldn’t be without the wow and flutter parameters, which make the whole thing very organic and unstable.

Unique is that the wow & flutter engine uses Perlin noise oscillators that drive pitch modulation that never repeats.

This is certainly a slightly different approach to generating the modulation, but the developer says that it gives you the same organic variation you’d hear from tape aging in hardware. Both the wow & flutter sections are fully adjustable with depth and rate control.

Flora Creative ships Dahlia tape delay with 12 factory presets, and you can also save your own patches in the app with instant recallability.

First Impression

I’m very happy that the developer is back in the iOS market.  It’s not a groundbreaking FX app for iOS/macOS, but a nice, simple tape delay. Exactly what we’d expect from this developer, but 10 years later and hopefully even better.

Flora Creative Dahlia is available now for $3,99 on the Apple App Store. It runs as an AUv3 plugin on iOS (iPad and iPhone) and macOS (native Apple Silicon).
