Cyma Forma RND: one-knob, multi-layer random Synthesizer designed to inspire

Superbooth 2026: Cyma Forma RND is a multi-layer, multi-synthesis one-knob random Synthesizer that is designed to provide inspiration.

Superbooth 2026 starts in just a few days and will showcase many new instruments. Besides classic synths and Eurorack modules, the show will also feature some products with more exotic concepts. The developers of the ALT drone Synthesizer have one.

Ahead of SB 2026, Cyma Forma, founded by two Vincents, announced the RND, a one-knob inspiration machine powered by a multi-layer digital Synthesizer and a random engine.

RND is not hot news for SB 2026, as visitors to SynthFest France 2026 were able to explore it at the young French company’s booth. Myself included.

RND is a collaboration between instrument maker Cyma Forma and French artist Bambounou, built around a single idea: stop playing, start listening.

The hardware design and the idea are dead simple: you have one big black button, press it, and a random sound arrives. Press it again, and a new sound will play. None of them is repetitive. According to the developer, the device can generate over 4 billion sounds.

Noneworthy: none of the sounds can be saved for later or as a backup. With each press, the previous sound is lost in oblivion.  Pressing the button is somewhat addictive, I have to admit. I pressed it a lot at the booth. A bit like doom scrolling for sounds.

Multi-Timbral And Multi-Synthesis Engine

At the heart of the RND is a digital multi-timbral Synthesizer. Each generated sound consists of 4 layers, each drawn from one of 8 synthesis engines: subtractive, FM, acid, noise, speech, Karplus-Strong, supersaw, and additive.

Each instrument in this patch has its own unique music-playing DNA. It can have various forms, including a sequence, a one-shot, or a drone. Thus, with each press, you get a very complex sound built around different sound elements.

Not tweakable on the hardware, but you can tweak and play the sounds and sequences via MIDI. And these sounds aren’t pre-designed presets or samples. RND is an inspirational sound source that always creates new timbres from scratch.

The engine also includes a sound mixer, five filter types, and various modulators. To keep everything musically in sync, Cyma Forma fine-tuned the RND engine and added 20 musical scales.

My expectations were low tbh because with random, you expect a lot of noise and unusable results. I pressed the button more than 10 times at SFF 2026 and was surprised by how melodic and usable the results were.

Connectivity With Nice Twists

The RND hardware is very compact. Okay, that’s obvious if there’s only one large button, but it offers a feature-rich connectivity.

It has a multi-purpose USB-C port that handles audio and MIDI. First, it transmits all four pre-reverb audio tracks over USB-C, giving you full, independent access to each.

The USB-C port also supports MIDI, providing four MIDI channels in and out with nine distinct MIDI modes. Although the hardware does not offer a way to adjust the engine, it is possible to tweak it with a MIDI controller.

Additionally, the USB-C port offers MIDI clock in and out, so you can keep random sounds in sync with other gear. On top, you have analog sync in and out via mini jacks. There is a stereo mix output on the hardware that provides the post-reverb engine mix.

Cyma Firma RND First Impression

RND is an original idea that stands out refreshingly from the mass of classic synthesizers. It’s not the ideal Synthesizer for making entire tracks; it’s more of an idea generator or a pure source of inspiration.

Cyma Forma RND is now available for pre-order at 125€ + VAT. Shipping will start in late June 2026. You can explore the synth in person at Superbooth 2026, booth Z245 in the tents outside.

  1. It’s a cool idea and the pricing is borderline so when the cost of shipping is 1/4 the cost of item it become difficult to justify. Having cheaper shipping options might help. Let the customer decide how they want it shipped.

    • I just ordered one, and even I would agree — $150 for the unit, which is a great price, and $39 for the shipping. DHL is always the most expensive and actually provides the worst service in the U.S.. Maybe it’s just because it’s a European thing?
