Timerift Audio Oh Mighty Grain is a new three-playhead granular delay plugin for macOS, Linux, and Windows, plus Oh My Grain is a free version.

Granular synthesis is all the rage. There’s never been as much hardware and software available as there is now.

German developer Timerift Audio has released two new cross-platform granular delay plugins: Oh Mighty Grain and Oh My Grain, a free version with limited features.

Timerift Audio Oh Mighty Grain

Oh Mighty Grain is a new granular delay plugin for macOS, Linux, and Windows.

Like classic delays, it has a buffer that stores the incoming audio, but instead of delaying it instantly, it breaks it down into small pieces. Only after this creative process does the delay section of Timerift Audio Oh Mighty Grain begin its work.

The plugin has three independent playheads, each with distinct grain and delay parameters: time, feedback, density, duration, spray, pitch, detune, down-sampler, and gain.

Additionally, you have a multi-tap section where you can set the tap amount and more per playhead. Thanks to its independent design, you can set different parameter values on each playhead, allowing you to create complex, evolving textures.

For example, if you both have various pitch settings, you can introduce nicely harmonic content or tension in your effected sound.

Alongside this, you have neat visual feedback for all three playheads, as well as dry/wet mix and down-sampler global controls.

If you are not sure about the new Oh Mighty Grain, Timerift Audio has also released Oh My Grain, a free, stripped-down version. Also available for macOS, Linux, and Windows.

Unlike Oh Mighty Grain, Oh My Grain only has two independent playheads, with a fraction of the features, instead of three. Settings like time control, feedback per playhead, duration, spray, and detune are missing.

Also not in the engine is the down-sampler that adds crunch to your grains. You have global color and feedback settings, as well as dedicated dry/wet mix controls. Also missing is the per-playhead tap functionality, and more.

Neat is that the free version still offers real-time visual feedback, so you get a sense of what’s happening in the granular delay process.

Oh My Grain’s interface looks very simple and invites immediate experimentation. Both plugins are well-suited for creating smooth soundscapes and textures, glitch rhythms, and more.

First Impression

At first glance, two nice new granular delay plugins. It’s very welcome that the developer offers a free version, but unfortunately, only in the VST3 option. AU and CLAP would be nice to see.

But for those who want more, a nice granular delay plugin with additional functionality is available for $10.

Timerift Audio Oh Mighty Grain is available now for $10 on its Gumroad shop. It runs as a VST3, AU, and CLAP plugin on macOS, Linux, and Windows. Oh My Grain is available for free download now as a VST3 plugin.
