Teenage Engineering OP-1 Field firmware 1.7 brings tape undo, a long-requested feature that took them 15 years to implement.
Teenage Engineering isn’t at Superbooth this year. Too bad, so no chance to check out their field desks in the wild. But behind the scenes at the Swedish company, which always provides a surprise and sparks heated discussions, things are brewing.
The K.O Amp was recently leaked, and there’s a launch event in Berlin on the first night of Superbooth. So they will be in Berlin but not at the booth. And now they’ve done something that nobody thought possible anymore.

Teenage Engineering has today released firmware 1.7 for the OP-1 Field Synthesizer. This update includes several new features and improvements.
One feature is a particular highlight: Firmware 1.7 introduces Tape Undo, a long-requested function that took 15 years to finally become available. Indeed, the OP-1 Field got tape undo before the release of GTA 6.
The developers say on Instagram:
15 years ago, we didn’t add undo to the OP–1 tape. we wanted to stay true to the feeling of recording at home with your 4-track. but to be honest, sometimes it’s nice to get a do-over. That’s why we are undoing what we did, we’re adding undo.
As an active and happy user of the OP-1 Field for almost two years, and an integral part of my live set, I’m very pleased with this long-awaited feature. Deleting failed takes was a challenge, and I’m glad that’s now a thing of the past.
So far, this feature is exclusive to the OP-1 Field. However, I hope an update for the original OP-1 will follow.
Alongside this “game-changing” feature of the OP-1 Field, they improved sync, added a MIDI monitor in the system settings, and expanded MIDI control, including improved support for incoming MIDI transport over Bluetooth.
There is also a new align metronome-to-tape function, a new pop-up when connecting to other TE devices, and a new tape screen that shows loop BPM when holding shift. The latter is only available in the free mode.
First Impression
I keep it short: thanks, TE, for this update. It improves the workflow a lot!
