PPG 300 System: Wolfgang Palm’s analog modular Synthesizer is reborn

PPG 300 System, Wolfgang Palm’s analog modular Synthesizer from 1976, is making a comeback with the help of the Liquid Sky Artistcollective.

Wolfgang Palm is primarily associated with the legendary blue-hybrid Synthesizer, the PPG Wave. Often forgotten, the German developer also built analog synths in the 70s, which are now very rare.

Last year at Superbooth 2025, the Liquid Sky Artistcollective, with the help of developer Cornel Hecht, re-released the PPG 1002 Mk2 as a hand-built, authentic replica.

This year, they’re taking it a step further. At SynthFest France 2026, they’re showcasing a clone/replica of the PPG 300 System from 1976.

PPG 300 System

Wolfgang Palm built analog modules in the 1970s. He developed them as a replacement for his original Moog Modular.

In direct comparison with the Moog Modular, its modules never achieved the same level of popularity.  That’s why they are so hard to find on the second-hand market.

Liquid Sky Artistcollective, specifically Dr. Walker and Cornel Hecht, is bringing the PPG 300 system back to the market. Like the 1002 MK2, this new release is also licensed under the original PPG name.

The developers say that the PPG 300 System is built entirely by hand, one unit at a time. Each component is carefully selected, not just by specification, but by ear.  Every VCO is individually tested and matched, acknowledging the subtle variations that bring analog circuits to life.

Configuration

The configuration of the 300 System that will be released this year includes the following modules:

  • 300: portamento
  • 2x 301: 3046-based VCO with four waveshapes, PWM, and sync
  • 2x 309M: signal mixer with four inputs
  • 317A: voltage-controlled highpass filter
  • 303A: voltage-controlled lowpass filter
  • 304: noise generator
  • 320: saturator
  • 303B: voltage-controlled attenuator
  • 314: advanced 3×8 step analog sequencer with accurate timing subdivisions: clock oscillator, sequential control, and SEQ connector
  • 311A: dual Analog Multiplier,  4 and 2-quadrant multipliers based on 3080 OTA chips
  • 313: analog switch, each step can be active for 1, 2, 3, 4, or 8 clock periods, before moving onto the next step
  • 307A: envelope generator
  • 305B: low-frequency oscillator (LFO)

All modules come pre-installed in a newly manufactured case with an integrated power supply.  The case also includes several additional I/O ports on this side. However, no information is currently available about these. I will provide more details as soon as they become available.

First Impression

A beautiful piece of modular history, brought back from the dead. Like the 1002 Mk2 from 2025, this replica will only interest those who absolutely want a PPG modular synth. Just like when Moog revived the Moog Modular. It’s no different here.

We’re currently living in amazing times when everyone can get something within their budget, from low-end to high-end. This PPG 300 System replica is one of the last. I think it’s great that they’re doing this. If you have the opportunity, why not?

The price will likely be in the very high range. Probably the price of a car. As a reminder, you can order the PPG 1002 MK2 at Thomann for 9,999 €.

The PPG 300 System replica will be hand-made on demand and start shipping later this year. Price is TBA.

You can check out a prototype at SynthFest France 2026 and hear it at 303 Years of Liquid Sky Cologne at Artheater Cologne-Ehrenfeld on May, 30, 2026.
