Pittsburgh Modular Voltage Lab Mini: a semi-modular synth comeback in small?

In a social media survey, Pittsburgh Modular shows interest in bringing back the Voltage Lab semi-modular Synthesizer as a mini version.

Pittsburgh Modular has been successfully collaborating with Cre8audio for several years. Before this close partnership, Richard Nicol’s company did everything themself, including the manufacturing. One of their last projects at that time was the Voltage Research Laboratory Synthesizer, which they unveiled at Superbooth 2019.

The synth was originally offered through a Kickstarter project. Interest in it remains high to this day. Now, the Lifeforms Voltage Lab could be making a comeback in mini format.

In a social survey, Pittsburgh Modular asked the community about three possible comebacks in mini format: the Lifeforms SV-1, Microvolt, and the Voltage Lab. The winner of this was the Pittsburgh Modular Voltage Lab Mini.

I would have chosen this synth as well, as it has a more interesting and unique feature set. They write:

Thanks for all the feedback. I have decided to treat this like a bit of a mini social experiment and bring everyone along with us on the design and manufacturing journey. This does not mean we are definitely going to produce any minis but we can figure that out together. #analog #eurorack #modular #synth #design

The concept shown in this survey has a modified/stripped-down design compared to the VL2. It has 40 HP and a 3D-printed plastic case with a built-in power supply.

However, all the features from the original Voltage Lab would be included: MIDI interface/arpeggiator, prime oscillator, secondary oscillator, two function generators (a & b), dynamics controller, and 2399 delay.

Each section also has its own patch sockets, giving you a full modular experience. You could also mount it in a Eurorack case and use it as a synth voice.

Important: at present, it is not an official product or announcement, but only a design of a possible release. However, I hope Pittsburgh Modular releases the Voltage Lab Mini, as it was a pretty original semi-modular synth with great character.

With Cre8audio’s help, they could produce and offer it for significantly less than the Kickstarter version. So fingers crossed that it comes back as a mini. Superbooth is coming up soon, so there’s hope.
