Feral-Aud.io Raven is a new two-oscillator AUv3 wave-morphing Synthesizer plugin for iOS and macOS (native Apple Silicon).

Things have been quite busy in the iOS world these past few weeks. Besides Bitcrush, there’s another new synthesizer on iOS.

Steffen Mølgaard Larsen of Feral-Aud.io, the developer of the Gorilla Synth, which was initially free, has released his second Synthesizer, RAVEN.

RAVEN is a new Synthesizer plugin for iOS and macOS.  Feral-Aud.io opted for a very simple, almost generic UI for RAVEN.

This immediately raised some red flags for me, as it strongly suggests AI-generated design. I can neither confirm nor deny whether this is the case.

At its core, RAVEN is a wavetable-morphing Synthesizer. It has two identical oscillators with various classic waveforms, as well as a unique wave drawing functionality. This also comes with a wavetable morphing option.

Extra depth can be achieved via the extra oscillator features, including sub-oscillator, ring modulation, FM, PWM, noise, and harmonics. In a dedicated oscillator mixer, you can create the perfect mix of these different elements.

Then it goes into a multimode filter with 12dB and 24dB options, as well as lowpass, highpass, and bandpass options. Cutoff, resonance, and envelope control give you traditional control over the filter.

On the modulation side, you have two hard-wired graph-based ADSR envelopes (filter, amp) and two multi-wave LFOs, also with drawable waveforms. Neat, it has a fade-in function, allowing you to delay the modulation impact up to 20 seconds.

While LFO 1 is fixed to the pitch, filter, PWM, morph, or amplitude, the second LFO has more flexible routing options via modulation slots.

The signal ends in a multi-FX processor with a fixed chain of chorus, distortion, delay, and into reverb. Further, it includes a 12-band parametric EQ.

Feral-Aud.io RAVEN ships with 56 factory presets, and new ones can be shared easily with a QR code. Additionally, it supports CoreMIDI and Bluetooth MIDI, including full MIDI CC mappings.

Thanks to AUv3 support, you can also use multiple instances of Raven.

First Impression

RAVEN looks like a very easy-to-use Synthesizer. I don’t see any major innovations compared to existing synthesizers. Waveform drawing and morphing is something we saw in various Snyths.

Nevertheless, it offers a nice feature set that lets you achieve a lot. Sonically, it’s solid and looks like a fun synth. In some areas, I would like more flexibility, such as with the modulations or the effects.

Feral-Aud.io Raven is available now for $7,99. It runs as a standalone app and an AUv3 plugin on iOS (iPhone and iPad) and macOS (native Apple Silicon).
