Sequences can be classic or highly complex. Today’s step sequencers allow users to design very evolving rhythms. And generative engines simplify this enormously, giving everyone this capability.
The Portuguese company ADDAC Systems adds variety to patterns in an innovative way. With the new Clock Bender module, they go to the very root of every sequencer: the clock.
ADDAC System Clock Bender
Clock Bender is a new 8HP module designed to get more out of classic clock signals. The ADDAC System Clock Bender connects simply via a clock input. Once done, the given signal can be processed in various ways.
From these, it generates two new independent outputs that dynamically accelerate or decelerate the BPM toward a user-defined destination BPM over a specified number of beats.
This means that the output generation is never constant; it will always be dynamically accelerating or decelerating, with no interval between two pulses being the same; the current interval will always be shorter or longer than the previous one.
This principle will generate unique metrics that, when played against the main clock, will create extremely unique patterns, from simple swing /syncopation to beyond free-jazz, completely unexpected while mathematically justified metrics.
Clock Bender introduces a unique approach to rhythm. It feels a bit unusual at first, very mathematical to me. But what it does to your clock or can do is pretty interesting.
It can add complexity to any pattern by superimposing extremely odd divisions, creating syncopation and rhythmic variety. Or simply transform static rhythmic patterns into dynamic, complex, layered ones.
First Impression
The possibility of bending the clock, and doing so very deeply, sounds exciting on paper. I must admit, it’s not the easiest module to grasp instantly. You have to understand the concept behind it. More demo videos on this module would certainly be very welcome.
