Excite Audio Evolve Air: the latest Evolve release is a hybrid morphing Synthesizer designed for atmospheric and ethereal textures.

With the Evolve series, Excite Audio has released a number of synthesizers over the past few months, all part of a single platform. But instead of offering a main platform plugin and extending it with expansions, they keep releasing new plugins.

The fourth chapter is now being added with the new Excite Audio Evolve Air Synthesizer.

Excite Audio Evolve Air

Evolve Air is a sample-based Synthesizer that captures the atmospheric and ethereal, shaped by breathy textures, wind instruments, and spacious atmospheres.

Excite Audio Evolve Air shares the same Synthesizer engine as the previous Evolve releases but differs in its content and macro effects.

According to the developers, it’s inspired by experimental and ambient artists like Tim Hecker, Jon Hopkins, Brian Eno, and others. It includes over 250 sound sources, covering a wide range of timbres.

Like the other Evolve synths, it offers a hybrid synth engine with four morphable sound-source layers, with either sample playback via sample import or classic subtractive waveforms.

Each sound source is tweakable with a handful of classic parameters: pitch, tone, pan, velocity, and more. From here, the output goes into four elastic-inspired macro effects.

The first is Mist, which adds a layer of noise to introduce grain and texture, while Drift, the second macro FX, stacks two layers of gently oscillating pitch modulation for slow, floating movement.

Then, Frost applies a shimmering, pristine delay that freezes the audio in time, and Cloud wraps your sound in a long-passed reverb that softens the highs and turns everything ethereal.

Colorful Shaping & Animation

Like the other Evolve instruments, the new Air edition also has a main multi-FX section with dual filters and 16 effects modules, including saturation, feedback, delay, reverb, modulation, phaser, pitch drift, and more.

There is also a modulation engine. It offers 12 mod sources, including 6 ADSRs with delay and hold, 2 LFOs with retriggering and offset options, velocity, and advanced keytracking. The included X /pad also functions as a dual modulation source.

A drag-and-drop system makes mapping modulations a breeze, and a modulation matrix handles and gives you a perfect overview of all the assignments.

Excite Audio ships Evolve Air with 250 newly professionally crafted presets, ranging from distant vocal phrases, ghostly pads, foggy melodic motifs, and vast cinematic spaces.

First Impression

Another beautiful, solid instrument in the Evolve series. But I’ll say it again: even though I’m happy that the platform is still growing, I would prefer to install one core plugin + expansions instead of another plugin every time.

Excite Audio Evolve Air is available now for an introductory price of 38,03€ instead of 57,53€. Evolve Air Lite is out now for 18,52€ instead of 28,28€. You can crossgrade from any full Evolve product for 28,28€ instead of 38,03€.

They run as VST, VST3, AU, and AAX plugins on macOS (native Apple Silicon + Intel) and Windows.
