Audiomodern Gatelab 2 is the new, souped-up version of its creative and playful gate sequencer plugin for macOS, Windows, and iOS.
Time machine on, and we travel back to the year 2021. In September of that year, Audiomodern released Gatelab, a free gate sequencer plugin for macOS, Windows, and iOS. Even today, it remains a popular freebie among music producers.
Now, four years later, the successor is here. Audiomodern has released Gatelab 2. Of course, it’s better and more comprehensive, but this time it’s not a free plugin. However, you can get it for free with any purchase made during its Black Friday/Holiday sale.
Audiomodern Gatelab 2
Gatelab 2 is a gate sequencer plugin and continues the concept of v1, but in expanded form. It offers traditional gate sequencing of up to 64 steps, using two sequencer lines.
Like the previous version, Audiomodern Gatelab 2 features a flow mode, allowing you to manipulate the volume curve and create a volume modulation generator.
There are also various sequence directions (forward, backward, ping-pong mode), a ratcheting function with up to three subdivisions, and a shuffle function. This is what you know from Gatelab 1.
Gatelab 2 introduces new randomization algorithms with which you can instantly generate new variations of your programmed patterns.
Alongside this, it features density controls and switchable flow or gate styles, allowing you to transform any sound into evolving rhythmic textures.
Filtering
Another new feature is a new multimode filter section with cutoff and resonance controls. This makes the plugin even more of an FX processor. This allows you to achieve various chopping, gating, etc. effects.
Additionally, it comes with an optimized preset manager and enhanced overall performance. Audiomodern Gatelab 2 can also output MIDI to drive other apps or plugins in your DAW. Thus, you can incorporate rhythm into any sound source.
According to the developers, they have also completely rebuilt the MIDI FX versions for AUv3 and Logic Pro. Yes, there is also a hands-on iOS version again.
The operation is just as simple, quick, and fun as in v1. You draw the steps into the sequencers, and you get instantly rhythmic results. Alternatively, you take the new randomization algorithms and you roll your patterns with the dice.
Gatelab 2 is a powerful yet simple plugin that enables you to turn static audio into dynamic grooves. Sequence and animate patterns, add rhythm, motion, and creative energy to any sound.
First Impression
A nice evolution of the Gatelab plugin. It’s great that there’s an iOS version again, as the plugin is a lot of fun to use with a touchscreen for programming steps on the fly.
It’s a shame it’s no longer a free plugin. Nevertheless, the asking price and the deal to get it for free with a purchase during its Black Friday sale are very fair from Audiomodern.
