Living Memory Software LayR, a powerful multi-timbral Synthesizer (256 voices) for iOS AUv3 now also runs on macOS (Apple Silicon + Intel)

The iOS platform is still young, just over 10 years old to be precise. Initially, making music on iOS was fraught with challenges, including CPUs that weren’t nearly as powerful as today’s M series. As a developer, you always had to find a happy medium between CPU and sound quality.

There were developers who made the most of the resources through great code. For example, Living Memory Software has released back in 2017 LayR, a multi-timbral Synthesizer that achieved up to 256 voices and up to 128 layers.

After a long hiatus, the company is now back with the free LayR Update 1.5 that brings the synth to macOS.

LayR 1.5 is a free updatet that is ready for download. The good news is not just the port to macOS. Thanks to Catalyst technology, the new LayR runs on both macOS Apple Silicon (M chips) as well as Intel.

In case, you didn’t know what exactly Living Memory Software LayR is. It’s a multi-timbral Synthesizer with a unique performance system where each consists of a set of instrument.

Each instrument consist of layers that can up to 128 layers, where each layer is a complete synth. In total, your performance can have up to 256 voices.

On the synthesis side, each layer features a dual morphing oscillator with advanced modulation options (FM, AM, and phase), two state-variable filters, a wave folder, and mixing section. The latter blends oscillators and filter in any serial/parallel combination.

Two LFOs with DC and audio frequency range, two wide range loopable ADSR envelopes, an amp ADSR and an random number generator with smooting filter, form the sophisticated modulation engine.

To refine your sounds, it has a stereo delay, reverb, and on the output section. Alongside this, it also has an 8-track 16-step arpeggiator sequencer where each track can have its own speed, playback mode and length.

It covers all sorts of classic arpeggiator/sequencer duties but is also capable of all kind of polyrhythmic loop patterns or even ambient generative music. Plus, there is full MIDI control, including MIDI CC.

First Impression

I’m very happy to see that Living Memory Software is back with this update. LayR was a very advanced synth with an impressive sound when it came out in 2017. I’m very excited to have this “monster” now on macOS as well. Welcome back!

Living Memory Software LayR 1.5 is available now as a free download for existing users. LayR is out now for $24,99 and runs as an universal app in standalone mode and AUv3 plugin on iOS (iPhone/iPad) and macOS (native Apple Silicon + Intel)

    • yes, it’s an issue people reporting. Did you load the standalone version first and then the plugin? Often iOS needs this detour. If it doesn’t work, please report it to the developer.
