Steady State Fate Tape-Op Distortion is a new analog tube & tape distortion module with an integrated Baxandall Equalizer.

If you want to add flavor and character to a sound or track, you’ll often use distortion. It’s especially nice when it’s analog, as it brings out the warmth even more. This is more difficult in software, but much easier in hardware to achieve.

The US-based developer of Steady State Fate has released a new distortion module that can do this very well in the modular environment.

TAPE-OP is a new 8HP all-analog tube & tape distortion module for Eurorack. There are no tubes or tape behind the panel, but instead a unique circuit.

Steady State Fate has designed a discrete op-amp for the module, featuring a class-A output stage and a multi-diode ladder to emulate the characteristics of vacuum tubes and analog tape saturation.

Then, it also features an integrated Baxandall equalizer that can be routed before or after the distortion effect. TAPE-Op also comes with a final stage Zener hard limit switch for additional distortion and headroom limiting. Handy, there is a built-in voltage-controlled amplifier with trim and tape bias controls.

Combining these with the Baxandall EQ and saturation, you get a vast variety of colorful saturated tones and compression effects.

First Impression

At first glance, a very nice, compact distortion module with a wide sound range. It’s a shame, however, that it’s not available in stereo and only a limited release.

SSF Tape-Op Distortion is a limited release and available now for $259 USD for a limited time only.
