WMD Skorpion, an 8-stage wavefolder module with waveform reanimation capabilities: first look

Superbooth 2025: WMD Skorpion is a new, unique 8-stage wavefolder module with deep waveform animation capabilities.

Classic oscillators have traditional waveforms like sine, sawtooth, etc. Thanks to wavefolder from the West Coast wold, you can take these simple waveforms into fascinating, harmonic-rich realms.

If that’s not enough for you, the next module might be right for you. For Superbooth 2025, WMD releases Skorpion, a unique concept of a wavefolder with 8 stages and tons of modulation.

WMD Skorpion

Skorpion (20HP) is a waveform mangler module that builds on William’s long pedigree of experimental module designs, exploring a new method of wavefolding using thresholds and target voltages to control a powerful vector core.

WMD says the Skorpion design process has been very technically challenging. It uses high-speed CMOS and precise analog design with a hybrid digital overlay for a solid UI.

It uses an 8-stage equivalent analog wave folder, allowing you to precisely manipulate simple waveforms (sine, saw, etc.) into complex shapes. A knob and fader mixed interface gives you hands-on control over them. It’s not just another more of the same wave folder module.

Skorpion offers an internal modulation engine with sources, allowing for macro animation of multiple parameters simultaneously for rich, evolving harmonic movements. They promise you can get timbres never heard before in hardware. We will see if this is true or just marketing.

Also onboard are shape and slope controls, allowing for smoother or harsher added harmonics. Cool, there is also a 1V/oct CV input for tracking timbres across notes. WMD says that Skorpion is in its 9th and final prototype phase, and nearing readiness for production.

On the I/O side, the module has a stereo output (L/R), and CVs over all the parameters.

First Impression

This looks like a very deep wave folder module capable of achieving wild shaping effects. I’ll upload a demo from the SB 25, so stay tuned.

WMD Skorpion is available now for pre-order for $999 and shipping is planned for September or October, however maybe be delayed depending tariffs and parts procurement. Pre-Orders are price locked and will not be affected by ever changing politics.

You can explore the module at Superbooth 2025. Due to the difficulty in projecting the future with parts sourcing, tariffs, etc, Skorpion will be produced in a single run, based on demand seen in preorders.

  1. $1K for a wave folder!? Get outta town. Maybe if I was independently wealthy from a trust fund and wanted to prove that to the world.
