Iftah Pyra is a new M4L MPE 12-voice polyphonic physical modeling string Synthesizer for Ableton Live and Push 3 Standalone.

Max for Live is an excellent environment for building custom tools. One advantage of this is that it is embedded in the Live engine, so it works very smoothly and efficiently. These devices can be samplers, effects, sequencers, utilities, and even sophisticated synthesizers.

A new one comes from a known face in the Ableton Live community. Iftah (formerly Skinnerbox) has just released Pyra, a new Max for Live physical modeling Synthesizer.

Iftah Pyra features a newly developed 12-voice engine that is capable of a wide range of sounds. The new synth features a handful of parameters, allowing you to craft acoustic-like string sounds from scratch.

On the interface, you can find the following parameters: character, type, frequency decay, nature (blends between acoustic and electric string types), damp, impact, feedback, sympathy, spread, expression, and more.

A highlight of the engine is its full compatibility with Ableton Live’s MPE implementation. So, you can play Pyra very expressively with any MPE controller. Additionally, you can play it microtonally using a microtuner or Ableton’s built-in tuning system.

Neat, Iftah also implemented tabbing support for the parameters in Pyra, making them accessible to blind, visually impaired, and sighted users—big thumbs up for this feature.

The engine can produce a wide range of string sounds, from acoustic to electric, plucked to bowed string sounds. Of course, more bizarre and unique organic timbres are also possible thanks to the physical modeling synthesis.

Oh, and Pyra is not just another Max for Live device for Ableton Live. You can also use it on the Ableton Push 3 Standalone, which allows you to expand the hardware with another sound generator.

First Impression

A lovely, organic-sounding Synthesizer device. As a big fan of physical modeling synthesis, I can’t pass up this release.

Iftah Pyra is available now as a pay-what-you-want download. You can get it for free or support the developer with a purchase. Both versions are identical.

It requires Ableton Live 11 or higher Suite or the standard version with a Max for Live license. It also runs as on the Push Standalone.
