Superbooth 2025: Doepfer has announced six new modules, including the new Mini Analog Sequencer, Fluctuating Random Voltage, and more.
Superbooth begins in less than two weeks, and with over 200 booths, there will be plenty to discover. Many booths will showcase Eurorack modules. The inventor of the Eurorack standard, Dieter Doepfer, will also have a booth.
Like every year, Dopefer will also have new modules for Superbooth 2025 on display. To be exact, six in number, including a compact analog sequencer.
Doepfer Superbooth 2025
Six new modules will be presented in the Bungalow Village this year. The highlight for me of the new Doepfer modules for Superbooth 2025 is the A-152-2.
It’s a compact 8-step analog sequencer with a creative feature set. Each step can be controlled with a dedicated knob and illuminated switch button. The latter are used to turn the gate of the step in question on or off.
Then, you can find three program functions: limit sets the sequence length, direct the running direction, and preset activates the preset management. They are also programmed using the illuminated switch buttons.
Talking about directions. You can choose between different playing directions, including: up, down, 2 x up, 2 x down, pendulum, pendulum type, and random. Yes, you read it that right. It also has a preset system, allowing you to save up to 8 presets that store various parameters (active steps, direction…)
Additionally, you can work with ratcheting (x2, x3, x4) individually for each step of the sequence. On the I/O side, you have a CV out, gate out (0V/+10V), a clock input (min +3V), and a reset input (3+V).
There is also internal MIDI output via a header on the back that allows you to communicate with the upcoming Micro-CV interface A-190-9.
The new A-152-2 looks like a great sequencer that reminds me of the lovely, discontinued Pittsburgh Modular Micro Sequence. However, it’s missing an essential feature: a built-in quantizer, which is a shame.
Fluctuating Random Voltages & Ribbon Controller
The second new Doepfer module for Superbooth 2025 is the A-149-3 Fluctuating Random Voltages, based on Buchla’s module of the same name.
According to Doepfer, it’s not a 1:1 clone but a version with expanded functionality. Unlike the original, it gives you access to virtually all internal signals (noisy triangle or S&H) and many adjustable parameters. The latter were fixed in the original module.
The A-149-3 module features control over the frequency and noisiness of the internal triangle oscillator, or correlation of the S&H and manual or automatic frequency control of the S&H clock oscillator. It also allows you to use the sample & hold or slew limiter independently from the other elements.
There are also inputs and outputs for all functions. Patch options allow you to create very versatile Buchla modulations. At first glance, another intriguing announcement from Doepfer.
For many years, Doepfer has had the fascinating Trautonium/Ribbon Controller and matching A-198-1 module in its portfolio. Now, there’s a major upgrade coming for Superbooth 2025 for the latter.
The new A-198-2 is an enhanced version with many new features and improvements. You can now switch between quantized/and non-quantized at the module or via an external control voltage input. Then, it offers nine user-programmable quantizations, displayed as a one-octave keyboard.
Other new features are: gate generation now has an additional hold mode, retrigger on/off switching at the module or via external CV, and the positions of the CV1 and CV2 are now adjustable in five steps (CV1) and seven steps (CV2).
Also new is an optional MIDI output and the ability to store parameters, including the nine quantization modes. Plus, many other improvements. After UDO Audio released a module for its ribbon controller, it is nice to see that there will soon be an upgrade for the old Doepfer module too.
More Modules
There are three more new Doepfer modules for Superbooth 2025. Already last year, Doepfer announced the A-188-9 VCO with a super-wide frequency range up to 500 kHz. It is intended to complement the A-188 BBD modules to create Karplus-Strong effects.
It has tweakable pulse-width and individual waveform outputs (rectangle, sawtooth, triangle, and inverted comb, as well as a 1V/oct input, and a CV input with attenuator.
Further, he will also showcase the new A-145-2, the slim version of the A-145-1 LFO. It features the same functionality but has a small HP size and has a dual-color LED display for the waveforms.
And finally, the A-119-2 is a new dual-input/amplifier module. It’s very similar to the A-119 but has 4HP, two amps, but no envelope followers. The module contains two amplifiers with separate adjustable amplification levels.
Each channel also comes with an overload display, and according to the specs, it can also be used for stereo signals.
Doepfer Superbooth 2025: First Impression
An exciting set of new modules for Superbooth 2025. My favorites are the new compact sequencer, even though it doesn’t have a quantizer, and the Buchlaresque modulation module.
Doepfer will showcase the new modules at Superbooth 2025 at the booth B30 (Bungalow Dorf).
