United Plugins Cyberdrive is a new creative multi-type distortion FX plugin developed in collaboration with JMG Sound.
Distortion effects are often associated with guitars and rock music. But those days are long gone. Electronic sounds are also suitable for heavy distortions. The Ohmicide plugin from Ohmforce recognized this early on and quickly became a crowd favorite.
The new effect release from United Plugins and JMG Sound is a new plugin that goes in the same direction.
United Plugins Cyberdrive
Cyberdrive is a new, creative, and mighty distortion plugin. United Plugins and JMG Sound are making big promises by saying that once you install their plugin, you may throw all your distortion in the trash.
The plugin is not another simple FX plugin but a sound design center that allows you to craft your distortion profiles. The heart consists of various modules: three flexible distortion slots, feedback, dynamics, tone 1, tone 2, motion, profile, and space.
Mighty is the ability to drag and drop modules to reorder or enable/disable them, giving total flexibility to the signal flow.
Three customizable distortion slots are available, each with 64 different distortions across eight distinct categories: classic, modern (wave folding…), shape, pixel (glitch..), amp, pedal, doom, and freak (FM, spectral…).
You can tweak the distortions with the mix, drive, and control knobs. The latter fine-tune the character of each distortion. Then, each distortion of United Plugins Cyberdrive also features an advanced filtering system with high-pass, low-pass, and multiband crossovers. Plus, a dedicated gain-compensated drive and mix to dial in the perfect balance.
Feedback & Creative Tools
The fourth module is a feedback module that unlocks its wildness and screaming character. You can use in a subtle way or go all-in an create crazy feedback timbres. This module features various delay modes such as synced, milliseconds, and pitched, allowing you to perfectly time your feedback.
Also intriguing is the ability to send feedback into its own input or include other modules inside its feedback path. That sounds like a lot of fun and it’s not all you can do with United Plugins Cyberdrive.
Not recognizable at first glance, but it is also a kind of multi-FX. Under the distortion section, it also hosts various other effects, including dynamics, tone-shaping, motion, profile, and space.
The dynamics section includes compression, gating, and transient shaping, while tone shaping offers EQs and filtering options.
Further, motion offers modulation effects (chorus, flanger, and tremolo), profile offers resonant FXs (cabinet simulation/metabolizers), and the space section hosts a reverb, delay, and diffusion to create lush soundscapes.
For additional fun, United Plugins Cyberdrive also added an advanced randomization engine for shuffling parameters. You can randomize the parameters of a specific area or the entire plugin, giving you near-unlimited new presets. Plus, it has a handy undo function, automatic gain compensation, and a smart bypass.
First Impression
This is a very deep distortion plugin that United Plugins and JMG Sound have developed together. It reminds me a lot of the popular Ohmicide plugin, which is now available as an Eurorack module—only in new and with more options. For the intro price of 15€, that sounds like an excellent deal.
United Plugins Cyberdrive is available now for an introductory price of 15€ (81% OFF) instead of 79€. It runs as a VST, VST3, AU, and AAX plugin on macOS (native Apple Silicon + Intel) and Windows. Simple copy protection that doesn’t require an iLok, internet connection, etc. Plus, you get lifetime updates.
